Yes shipping containers are waterproof, but not beyond limits. Shipping containers, when properly maintained and kept in good condition, can withstand the vast majority of weather conditions but they are not 100 percent waterproof. Given shipping containers are constructed to hold their own against Mother Nature when she’s at her worst, including at sea where water intrusion is a real concern, the answer probably doesn’t surprise you.

Does this also mean shipping containers are moistureproof? Yes, all shipping containers from Midwest Storage Containers come fully weatherproofed, made from rugged COR-TEN™ steel, with marine-grade wood flooring, which is resistant to water and moisture. In addition, containers are ventilated and come inspected prior to delivery, ensuring the container is in top condition. During inspection, our team checks caulking, looks for signs of rust, general signs of wear and if there has been any damage to the container. After delivery, assuming you keep your container well-maintained and closed and locked when not in use, it will be easy to keep moisture out.

Other Weather-Related Questions You May Have About Shipping Containers

Are Shipping Containers Airtight?

Shipping containers, including ones from Midwest Storage Containers, are designed with vents for air circulation so they are not airtight. This is critical for preventing condensation and other moisture from getting into your shipping container, where moisture could damage your belongings.

If you need an airtight container, modifications can be made so you get the shipping container you require, but you’ll be giving up protection from water intrusion and moisture as part of the tradeoff.

Are Shipping Containers Fireproof?

With their corrosion-resistant steel, shipping containers have a lot of fire resistance but they are not fireproof. This is part of why it’s critical to avoid storing any hazardous or flammable materials inside your container, as blazing-hot temperatures for an extended period will warp or even melt steel and damage the marine-grade flooring.

Fire-resistant paint and other modifications can be made to your shipping container to increase fire resistance. If you’re interested in a shipping container with maximum fire resistance, contact our team to discuss customization options.

Are Shipping Containers Tornadoproof?

Designed for strength and durability, shipping containers are incredibly resilient to a variety of storms and natural disasters, including tornadoes. With their rugged COR-TEN™ steel construction, shipping containers that are anchored and secured to the ground will withstand most tornado-force winds, if the container was not customized to include any windows.

Both violent and uncommon, it would take an EF3, EF4 or EF5 tornado to risk damaging a Midwest Storage Container that’s been properly maintained and secured prior to touching down. On average, EF3, EF4 and EF5 tornadoes make up about six percent of all tornadoes in the United States.

Hopefully you won’t experience a tornado any time soon, but we hope we put your mind at ease should the worst occur.
